We would like to Thank Larry Pope
for coming out to teach our students Capoeira/Silat.
Our students had a lot of fun, and gained valuable instruction
in a different martial art.
Capoeira: Capoeira is a Brazilian martial art that combines elements of dance, acrobatics & music, and is sometimes referred to as a game. It was developed in Brazil mainly by African descendants with native Brazilian influences, probably beginning in the 16th century. It is known by quick and complex moves, using mainly power, speed, and leverage for leg sweeps.
Silat: The formal system of Indonesian's fighting art is called pencak silat. The people of the Malay ethnicity group has been training in this fighting system as early as the 6th century. Initially pencak silat was developed from observations of animal movements and natural surroundings. Pencak silat was used for defending against bandits and tribes from the outside the archipelago. In addition it was used to protect the family and one's honor.
